Polymer Clay Mediums
Clayers use various polymer clay mediums to preserve their clay creations once they've been baked, air-dried or decorated. For some clays, such as Sculpey® Air Dry Modeling Clay, glazing keeps moisture and dirt from absorbing into the clay. For other polymer clays, adding the right type of medium, glaze or varnish produces a professional shine or finish.
Understanding Polymer Clay Mediums
Every polymer clay crafter will be turned on to a sealer at some point. There are many types of sealers, varnishes and clear coatings in the world of polymer clay — the trick is to know when and how to use them.
Clay Softeners and Thinners
Clay softeners and thinners are designed for improving the texture of dry, crumbly clay to give it the optimal consistency. Sculpey® offers two types of clay softeners — a solid and a liquid clay conditioner.
When using the Sculpey® Solid Clay Conditioner, break off a small piece of softener and mix it with your polymer clay. To reach your desired consistency, keep adding either the solid or liquid clay conditioner to the mixture.
If you are using Sculpey® Thinner and Clay Softener, start with two to four drops per 2 ounces of clay. Mix thoroughly, adding one drop at a time until you achieve your desired consistency. You can use this polymer clay medium to thin out thicker Liquid Sculpey®.
Oven-Bake Clay Adhesive
Oven-bake clay adhesive from Sculpey® bonds two pieces of polymer clay. When using this polymer clay medium, all you have to do is apply a little pressure to join the clay pieces, taking care to avoid distorting shapes or details. Oven-bake clay adhesive sticks raw to baked clays and raw to raw clays, as well as baked to baked clays.
Sculpey® Oven-Bake Clay Adhesive requires baking to achieve adhesion, and it acts as an excellent medium for clay-to-clay bonding. Sculpey® Oven-Bake Clay is also a great choice for adhering oven-bake clay to wood or other porous surfaces before baking.
Are you trying to decide what types of oven-bake clay adhesives to use with your clay? At Sculpey®, we recommend:
- Flexible hot-melt glues.
- Silicone glues — E-6000 and G00P.
- Super Glue Gel — not liquid!
To adhere clay to metal or glass, we recommend baking your piece before affixing it to the surface. Always test any adhesive first to check for compatibility with our clays.
Sculpey® Satin Glaze
This polymer clay medium from Sculpey® is a satin polymer clay glaze designed to protect and lend a new finish to your creations.
- Cured polymer clay: Allow 30 minutes between each coat to allow for sufficient drying.
Sculpey® Gloss Glaze
Sculpey® Gloss Glaze is a polymer clay medium specially formulated to add a smooth, glossy finish to your clay projects. Once you've allowed your clay to cure completely, Sculpey® Gloss Glaze can be brushed onto the cooled piece.
