Sculpey Soufflé Ring Dish

Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Condition all three colors of clay and roll out a sheet of each color on the #1 setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Fold each sheet in half and use the Acrylic Roller to roll the folded sheet smooth so there is no air trapped inside the fold. Trim each slab of clay into a trapezoid-like shape with the wide end being just over an inch. Position the 3 pieces together with the Sandcastle in the middle as shown in the photo; this arrangement will result in a 3 color Skinner Blend. Push the edges together firmly and blend the seams a little bit on both sides. You want to avoid having the sections separate from each other on the first pass through the Clay Conditioning Machine.

Position the pieced together slab of clay so that the seams between the colors are perpendicular to the rollers or so that each color is touching the rollers. Roll the slab through once and place on your work surface. Fold the sheet in half so that when the edges meet you have the same color touching; meaning the Cowboy edge folds onto Cowboy and the Pesto edge folds onto Pesto as seen in the photo. Roll through again with the seams between the colors perpendicular to the rollers. Repeat this process until you have a smooth graduation of color. While creating the blend try your best to keep the width of the sheet to about 4” wide. If the sheet gets too wide you are going to have a hard time positioning the cutter in a way that will capture all three colors.

Once you have completed making the blended sheet of clay place it onto your work surface. Pick up the silk screen and place it onto the sheet so that the pattern is off to the side on the Pesto color and slightly overlapping onto the Sandcastle colored section. Once you have the screen in place gently smooth it onto the clay. Use the painter’s tape to mask off the surface of the clay around the screen; don’t press the tape down onto the clay, just gently smooth it down into place. Masking off the area around the screen will help keep paint from smearing over the edge of the screen and onto an area you don’t want painted. Once you have paint screened onto the clay immediately lift the screen, peel off the tape and place the screen into the tray of water. Let the paint on the clay dry for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.

Pick up the circle cutter and position it so that the outside the screened circle is almost touching the inside edge of the circle cutter and also so that the circle cutter is covering an area that has all three colors in the blend included. Cut out the circle and remove the excess clay.

Brush a thin layer of cornstarch over the silk screened part of the circle. Lift the circle and place it on the bottom of the glass globe so that the painted surface is against the glass. Gently press the clay onto the glass to that you are forming the clay across the flat bottom and onto the curve of the globe. Make sure the clay is making solid contact all of the way around. Bake directly onto the glass for 20 minutes and let cool completely.

Once the piece has cooled remove it from the glass. Rinse the baked piece under lukewarm water to rinse off the cornstarch. Dry the piece and paint a thin coat of Satin Glaze over the inside of the dish.
