Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and
water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6
mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Sheet 1/4 bar Spiced Rum through the pasta machine on the third thickest setting or roll with Acrylic Clay Roller to about 1/16” thickness. Cut out two of the small cutter shapes. Set these two shapes aside.

Step 3

From the remainder of the Spiced Rum from Step 2 and 1/4 bar of Ivory, make two logs that are about the same size and shape. Push them together with their long sides touching as shown.

Step 4

Roll them flat together with the Clay Roller.

Step 5

Fold them vertically matching like color to like color. Press through the pasta machine on the thickest setting pressing the fold end through the rollers first.

Step 6

Keep folding as you did in Step 5 and pressing through the pasta machine on the thickest setting repeating folding and pressing until the colors blend into each other in a desired pattern.

Step 7

Cut two of the large petal shapes from the blended sheet. This photo also shows the small pieces that were cut from solid Spiced Rum in Step 2.

Step 8

Poke holes in the tops of each piece with the Blunt Point Tool.

Bake following the baking instructions for Sculpey Soufflé™. Allow to cool completely before handling.

Step 9

Add dots of color to the larger pieces with the gold paint marker.

Add gold paint around the edges of the smaller pieces with the gold paint marker.

Allow the paint to dry before proceeding.

Here is the layout for the earring assembly.

Step 10

Use flat nose pliers to connect the 6 mm jump ring through the clay piece and attach the 4 mm jump ring to the 6 mm.

Step 11

Attach the 4 mm jump ring to the ear wire using flat nose pliers. They are all ready to wear!
