Sculpey® Soufflé Eye Catching Carved Pendant

Your Workspace:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Getting Started:
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Cut the package of Jade clay into pieces and run each piece through the Sculpey Clay Conditioning Machine on a #1 (widest) setting a few times. Add the various pieces together to make two #1 sheets of clay that are at least 3 inches square. Stack the two pieces of clay together.

Use the flexible Super Slicer blade to cut the two pieces. Bend the blade and press through the clay to cut a rough triangle with each edge curving out. The top edge should be the widest edge. Curve the blade once again and cut a smaller piece off this triangle.

Cut off a length of the silver colored wire that is about 4 inches long. Use the needle nose pliers to start a loop at one end of the wire and carefully continue to wrap the wire around the original loop to create a coil. Repeat in the opposite direction from the other end, making this coil a little larger but leaving about 1-1/2 inches of wire between the two coils. Use the needle nose pliers to bend the remaining wire into a random shape. Put a couple drops of Bake and Bend on each coil and press the completed coil into the smaller piece of Jade clay.

Bake according to the directions above in Step 1.

Once the clay has baked and cooled, use the carving tool to etch lines that radiate roughly from the outside point of the triangle and across the larger piece of clay. You don't have to press deeply to etch the surface of the clay!

Paint the entire surface of the carved piece with the white craft paint and quickly wipe the wet surface with a damp paper towel to remove the excess paint. The carved lines will leap out in detail from the white paint! Set this piece aside to dry.

Once the paint has dried, attach the two pieces together. Wrap a short length of wire (about one inch) around a bamboo skewer to create a short coil of clay for the bottom of the pendant. Slide the wire off the skewer. Wrap another longer piece of wire in the same fashion to create the top wire.

Use the Needle Tool to put holes in both pieces at the bottom of the pendants in the position you want to put the coil.

Add a drop of clear fast drying glue to each end and use the pliers to press the wire ends into the holes.

Drill holes, using the needle tool, in the top of each of the pendant pieces and repeat step 9 to set the coiled wire in the top. Attach your selected chain to either side of the coil.
