Sculpey Premo™ Orchid Metallic Mokume Gane Earrings

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure tocover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and
water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching
colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card
or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼"
(6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking
times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Roll out each color on the widest setting and cut equal amounts of each clay into squares (.32 oz).

Stack squares in order of light to dark (Pearl, Light Pink, Fuchsia, and Orchid Metallic.

Roll through pasta machine on setting 3 (a middle thickness setting on most machines).

Cut edges to make an even rectangle, then cut rectangle in half.

Stack the layers so the colors remain in order from lightest on top to darkest on the bottom, keeping the edges aligned to preserve the pattern.

Repeat steps 4-6 three more times.

Cut clay into eight equal pieces.

Stack the layers so the colors remain in order from lightest on top to darkest on the bottom, keeping the edges aligned to preserve the pattern.

Gently press down to get about a 3 mm thickness using the plastic roller and your hands.

Use the Texture Wheel Set to add a design on the top of the clay by pressing down with medium amount of pressure. This will create patterns throughout the layers.

Use the tissue blade to gently scrape off thin layers to reveal the mokume gane pattern you created with the stacking and texture.

Roll out remaining orchid clay on setting 2 on atlas with setting 0 or 1 being the widest- (about .56 oz).

Lay the mokume gane slices on the orchid clay base as shown.

Roll the clay through the pasta machine on setting 2.

Find the patterns you want to show on your flower earrings and cut (2) flower shapes out. Remove the middle piece using a small cutter. If you don’t have a drill to drill your assembly holes after baking, use toothpicks to make holes on the top and bottom of each flower before baking/curing the clay.

Bake according to the directions in Step 1 above.

Drill holes on the top and bottom of each flower for assembling.

Here is the assembly layout for these earrings.

Use the 1-step looper to slide the ball pin through the pearl bead and create a loop. Repeat with other pearl bead. (You can also use round nose pliers to create the loops if you don't have the 1-step looper.)

Open a 6 mm jump ring and loop the bead and one end of a flower through. Close jump ring and repeat for the second earring.

Now open another 6 mm jump ring and loop the other end of the flower and the huggie hoop through. Close the jump ring and repeat with other flower and huggie hoop.
