Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index
card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6
mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the
baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take
longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE
MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Cut approximately ¼” a bar each of the Thistle, Graphite Pearl, Turnip and Purple clay color and ½” each of a bar of the White and Peony.

If you are conditioning by hand, condition each color and use your acrylic roller to rollout each color. If you are conditioning using a clay machine, begin to condition your pieces through your clay machine on the thickest setting. Fold in half and continue to run through the machine to ensure the clay is conditioned and ready to work with. (Make sure to wipe down your machine between colors to avoid any contamination from the previous color). After you have your sheets of clay, cut the White and Peony in half.

Step 3

After conditioning, put aside one half of the Peony Color to use as the top part of your color block. Carefully roll the other colors into strips about 4-5” in length. (You
will have two strips of white.)

Step 4

Now that you have all of your clay rolled out, start to twist or braid your colors together and twist into one long roll.

Step 5

Roll the twisted colors into a coil.

Step 6

Use your roller to begin flattening out the coil and start rolling out into a flat circle. You will start to see the colors blend into each other. If you want more marbling
effect, you can take that flattened roll and repeat the process of twisting and roll into a coil.

Step 7

Once you have your desired marbled effect, roll into a flat sheet. You can always roll through your rolling machine for a quick run through to check the thickness and make
sure it is even all the way through. Use your clay blade to cut a clean straight edge along the top of the flattened sheet of clay.

Step 8

Using the Peony sheet that was put to the side, use the sandpaper to gently press the texture into the clay. Use your clay blade to cut a clean straight edge along the bottom of the textured sheet of clay.

Add a small amount Sculpey Liquid Clay to each straightened edge using a small tool and attach them together.

Step 9

Align the connected portions as the center so the colors are balanced on each side and use your circle cutter to cut two matching pieces.

Slowly and carefully run it along underneath the clay pieces to pull it away from your surface using your clay blade. Transfer to your baking surface and place in the pre-heated oven and bake as directed. *Remember to let your pieces cool completely before working with them.*

Step 10

Once your pieces have cooled, remove from the baking surface and on the backside, place a small dot of super glue to add the earring post. Allow drying time as per super glue instructions. (Once glue is dried, you can also add resin for extra support and shine)

Step 11

Enjoy your beautiful large statement stud earrings!
