Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and
water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching
colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card
or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼"
(6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking
times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat
up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE
OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Cut 2/5 of a half-ounce of white clay and condition it well. Roll it into a thick slab—just about the thickness you'd want your earrings to be.

Step 3

Use the third and fourth oval stencils from your template to cut out two large and two small ovals. Cut the shapes using Tool #3 in the Sculpey Bake Shop Modeling Tools Set.

Step 4

Gently pinch and shape the ovals with your fingers to give them an organic, imperfect look. Use the ball end of Tool #1, press small indents all over each piece to add texture.

Step 5

Use the needle tool to poke one hole at the bottom center of each small oval. For the larger ovals, poke holes at both the top and bottom centers, making sure they go all the way through.

Step 6

Bake/cure your pieces according to the directions in Step 1 above. Once cooled, use a small paintbrush to apply gold paint along the edges of each oval. You may need to do multiple layers; let them dry completely before moving on.

Step 7

Use 6 mm jump rings to attach each small oval to the bottom of a large oval with your pliers. Close the rings securely.

Step 8

To create custom jump rings, use round jewelry pliers and wrap wire around the thickest part to form a perfect circle. Refer to your photo for size and shape.

Step 9

Cut the wire to size with wire cutters to complete your handmade jump rings. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 to make enough for both earrings.

Step 10

Cut your chains to the desired lengths, about 1-1.5 inches. Attach the crystal charms to the chains using 4mm jump rings.

Take the jump rings you made earlier and loop them through the bottom holes of the large ovals.

Then attach your chains to those jump rings.

Superglue the ends of the jump
rings where needed if the wire is very thin.

Step 11

Continue layering more crystal charms on the chains if you'd like, and repeat everything on the second earring.

Step 12

Flip the earrings over and add a small dot of superglue to the back of each large oval. Press the earring post into place and let it dry completely.
