Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Next, you’re going to want to roll out a flat slab. You can do this by lying two of the same thickness rulers side-by-side and using them as your guide to make sure your surface is even. Shoot for about a quarter of an inch thick. You don’t want to go too thin or it’ll be impossible to work with, so ere on the side of thicker than thinner.

It's time to create your Skinner blend. You want to cut your piece width depending on how much of each color you want to be shown in your design. I cut mine to be larger of the Cabernet and Coastal Pearl and then a thinner strip of the Sedona. You may have to practice a few times to get this right.

Step 3

Now use your roller to layer the pieces and smoosh them together so they adhere as one piece.

Step 4

Then begin running the clay through the past maker over and over until they blend together. Be sure to fold the same way, lines matching, each time. This may take 10-30 minutes depending on your desired level of blend.

Step 5

Use the circle cutter closest to the size of your fringed pieces to cut a circle out of the Skinner blended clay.

Step 6

Use your blade to cut the circles in half to create two matching half circles that are the size of your fringed pieces. Use your needle tool to place holes at the center top and bottom of each half circle for assembly after baking. (You can also choose to drill the holes after baking with a hand drill or Dremel).

Bake your pieces according to the directions in Step 1 above.  Allow the clay to cool.

Step 7

Once the clay has cool it is time to assemble your jewelry! Then I assembled all my pieces! And now they're ready to wear!

I hope you enjoy these fun earrings, the possibilities are endless when you use this technique!
