Sculpey® III Coral Crabby

Your workspace:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Getting Started:
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Mix the Red and Orange clay to create a coral color.

HEAD: Roll a one inch ball of coral into and flatten the bottom. Lay on your work surface

Roll two balls of white into teardrop shapes for the eyes, insert black seed beads.

Using a needle tool or toothpick make the desired mouth – make it whimsical – add nostril openings at this point.

Using two more small amounts of coral make two comma shapes and place over the eyes for eyelids.

SPOTS: Make a bunch of tiny, tiny balls for spots and place on the face. Save a few ‘spots’ for claws.

CLAWS: Roll two ¾” balls of coral and shape into teardrops, cut to separate them into claws and add ‘spots’ to these two claws.

GRASS: Using ½ to ¾ inch of green clay, make a long teardrop and indent grass lines using a needle tool or toothpick and add to the back or side of the crab

TUBE CORALS: Using two balls of violet clay, roll out two cone shapes and insert the end of a paint brush to open them up and attach them to the shell using Bake & Bond.

Using Bake & Bond, place CRAB in the desired position in the shell housing. Bake the entire assemblage according to the directions in Step 1 above.

When cooled/cured you may add a tiny drop of white paint on the end of a toothpick to add cheek highlights if desired.
