Project Instructions
Your workspace:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Getting Started:
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Make a sheet of Black and a sheet of White clay using the clay conditioning machine on a #2 setting. The sheets should be 2” wide. Stack the Black strip on top of the White strip. Gently roll the two layers together with the acrylic roller to get rid of any air trapped between the sheets. Cut the strip in half cross-wise and stack again making sure you keep the Black and White alternating. Repeat this until you have a stack that has 8 sets of Black and White stripes and that the stack is 2” wide and about 1-1/2” deep. Use the comb tool to drag lines across the top of the stack running the 2” length of the “face” of the stack. This will give you a guide for cutting even slices. Use your Super Slicer blade to cut several slices from your stack.
Condition the Candy Pink clay and roll out a sheet on the #6 setting of the clay conditioning machine. Place the sheet on your work surface. Pick up a slice from your Black and White stack and lay it on top of the sheet of Candy Pink. Pick up another slice and lay it down so it is butted up against the first slice you put down; be sure that the stripes are still alternating correctly. Repeat this until you have a band of stripes that is about 3-1/2” inches across. Once you have your 3-1/2” band of stripes laid out, use the acrylic roller to smooth them down by rolling up the length of the stripes. Trim away the excess Candy Pink clay and lift the striped strip off of your work surface. Make sure your Clay Conditioning Machine is set on the #1 setting and position the strip of clay so that the lines of the stripes are perpendicular to the rollers. Roll the sheet through once and place it back onto your work surface.
Cut two 1-1/2” circles of clay from the sheet.
Pick up one of your 1-1/2” striped circles and lay it out on your work surface so the stripes are running on a diagonal as you look at it. Pick up your mini heart shaped cutter and cut out the heart in a position that looks good to you; just be sure you cut out the heart at least ½” in from the outside edge of the circle; set the heart shaped piece that got cut out to the side, you will use it later. To make the earrings a mirror image you need to have the stripes running on a diagonal line in the opposite direction and the heart cut-out on the other side of the circle. For example if the first piece has the stripes running on a diagonal from the lower left to the upper right and your heart cut-out is on the outside left, the other piece will have the stripes running a diagonal from the lower right to the upper left and the heart cut-out will be on the outside right. To make the mirror image follow these steps: Pick up the circle you just cut the heart out of. Place it face down on the other circle making sure that the stripes line up over each other around the rim of the circles; meaning black over black and white over white. Place the two circles on your work surface and pick up your needle tool. Position it so the point is facing down through the heart shaped hole. Use the tip of the needle tool to gently make a finely dotted line that traces the inside of the heart cut out onto the surface of the bottom circle. This faint dotted line will be the guide for cutting out the heart on the second circle. Lift away the top circle and place the heart cutter over the dotted line and cut the heart out; set this heart shaped cut out to the side like you did earlier. Place both circles onto the Hollow Bead Maker. Make sure the circles are pressed down firmly and that the edges are pressed down on the form. Bake the circles on the Hollow Bead Maker for 20 minutes and let cool completely.
Roll a sheet of Candy Pink clay on a #4 setting. Spread a thin layer of Bake n’ Bond on the underside of the striped dome you made in Step 3. Press the sheet of Candy Pink clay into the underside of the dome and use your Super Slicer blade to trim the clay around the edge of the dome. Repeat this process with the second dome, bake for 10 minutes and let cool completely.
Cut a 1-1/2” length of the black coated craft wire. Bend the wire in half over the small end of the round nose pliers. Use the round nose pliers to bend a curve at the end of wire on each side, make the curve face out to the sides. Make a mark on the underside of the dome at an outer edge to indicate where you want the earring to hang from. Place the bent piece of wire against the underside of the dome in the place you marked. Hold it in place firmly and bend it against the edge of the dome so that the top of the bend in the wire sits just above the edge of the dome. Remove the bent wire piece. Pick up one of the cut out heart pieces you ended up with in Step 3, place the bent wire back onto the underside of the dome, add a drop of Bake n’ Bond over the wire, and press the heart piece over the wire. Make sure you press the heart down firmly so the wire is sandwiched between the back of the dome and the heart shaped piece of clay. Repeat this process on the second dome. Bake both pieces for 15 minutes and let cool completely.
Once the pieces have cooled completely attach the ear-wires into the open bend of the black wire.
