Project Instructions
Getting StartedPolymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
For torso: Roll out a 1.25” ball of gray clay made from mixing black and white or gray and shape it into a teardrop and place on the work surface. For hind legs, roll out and flatten two .75” balls of gray into oval shapes and press one on each side of the torso. For added stability, insert a piece of toothpick into these pieces
Roll out two tapered logs each from .75” balls of gray and press into the shoulder area for front legs. At this point indent crease lines and toenail impressions into all legs.
Head: Insert half a toothpick into the neck area for added stability. Roll a 1” ball of gray into an elephant shape head (basically a ball and pinching out a truck) and insert over toothpick. Using the end of a paintbrush make an indentation at the end of the truck.
Add ears by flattening two balls of .75” gray clay. At this point chalk/blush the inside of ears, cheeks and legs.
Tail: Flatten a thin log of gray and make indention lines for the end hairs and attach to his backside.
Ladybug: Make a small ball of red and indent a center line down the back. Add a tiny ball of black for the head. Place into the toe area on the right hind leg.
BAKE AS DIRECTED: When cooled draw on eyes and add white dots of paint for cheek highlights. Add black dots on the ladybug
