Project Instructions
Getting Started:Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on plain white paper, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first. .
To make the mokume gane cabochons, begin with Periwinkle, Silver, and White. Use a ¼bar of each color and make into sheets using the clay conditioning machine. Periwinkle on the# 1 (widest) settingand White and Silver on the # 4(medium) setting. Cut all three color sheets to an equal dimension. Stack.
Pass the stacked sheets through the clay conditioning machine on the # 1 (thickest) setting. Cut in half and stack again. Repeat passing through the clay conditioning machine and cutting two times more. Cut the stack and layer it so that the slab is about 1”x 2-3”.Using the Sculpey Technique Design blocks (dots), press the dots design block into the surface firmly.
With the Sculpey Super Slicer, slice a thin slice across the horizontal surface of the textured block. Repeat to get a good sheet that has pleasing pattern across it.
Pass Periwinkle clay through the clay conditioning machine on the # 4 (medium) setting. Lay the slice of clay from step 3 onto the Periwinkle sheet and roll smooth with the acrylic roller. Using theGraduated Metal Cutters cut 4 circles the size of the medium round cabochon mold shape. Press the cut piece in the mold and fill the back with clay. Trim any excess clay by holding the clay blade horizontal against the mold. Carefully remove the cabochon from the mold. Make4 more patterned cabochons.
Make a sheet of Silver clay about 4” square on the # 4 (medium) setting of the clay conditioning machine. Press the sheet onto a layer of silver metal leaf. Smooth the surface using the acrylic roller. Cut out 5 circles using the crinkle cutter.
Using the small ball stylus tool from the Sculpey Style & Detail Tool Set add details to each scallop.
Put a drop or two of bake and bond in the center of the foil covered disc and press a patterned cabochon in the center. Repeat with the remaining 4 discs and cabochons. Bake according to the directions above.
Roll a sheet of Periwinkle clay on the #1 setting of the clay conditioning machine. Roll a sheet of White Gold Glitter on the# 9 (thinnest) setting on the clay conditioning machine. Press the Glitter sheet over the Periwinkle sheet. Roll them together on a # 4 (medium) setting
Using the Sculpey Mini MetalCutters (basic shapes) cut 13 teardrops and 2 crescents with the mini cutters. Cut 4 circles with the straws and 4 small ovals by pinching the straw end.
Arrange the pieces as shown in the example to create all the individual clusters that will be joined in the necklace. Press the pieces firmly together at the edges.
With a fine needle tool, pierce through the pieces as needed to assemble. Bake the pieces according to the directions above. Assemble the pieces with jump rings. Attach a length of chain and clasp at the back.
