Liquid Sculpey® Starfish Trinket Dish

Getting Started with Liquid Sculpey®:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured Liquid Polymer Clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately. - Stir Liquid Sculpey® completely. Thin with Sculpey® Liquid Clay Softener as needed -
Wash hands after use (we have found that baby wipes work best)

Baking (also called Curing):

 -It is important to use oven thermometer when you bake the liquids so that you can ensure your oven is at the correct temperature.

-Do not microwave the liquids. They must be baked in a Preheated oven at 275 ºF (130 ºC) for liquid colors and 300 ºF (149 ºC) for Clear – Do not exceed baking temperatures.

-If your piece is less than 1/4” bake for 15 minutes. For thicker pieces that are 1/4” or above bake for 30 minutes.

-If your liquid project has become yellowed or discolored in the oven, when you remake it, tent it by placing either – folding an index card in half and placing your project under it by using aluminum foil over your project.

Here’s a tip for baking perfectly in silicone molds. Dampen a dish towel with water and wring out as much of the water as you can. Fold the damp towel so that the molds can sit level on top of it. The damp towel will slow down the curing process so that the LS will cure evenly throughout and avoid warping.

This is how the mold looks in its natural position. It has a floor which is facing downward. Both the floor and the walls of the dish will be filled.

In order to spread mica powder around the textured edges, this is most easily done if the mold is turned inside out. This is how the mold looks when it is inside out. The floor of the dish is still facing downward but the textured sides are now exposed.

With the mold inside out, spread a light coating of mica powder all over the areas that are textured with a cotton swab.

I also spread the mica powder in all the crevices between the walls and the floor as well.

Turn the mold back to its natural position so that the mica powder is back on the inside.

Drag lines of mica powder on the cotton swab through the floor of the trinket dish too as desired.

Pour the Amber Translucent Liquid Sculpey® (LS) in the center of the floor and allow it to spread naturally into the walls. The starfish took two bottles of liquid for filling.

Prepare a baking rack if you have one to suspend the mold on top of. This will help air circulate under the dish as well and help it to bake more evenly.

Keep filling the mold to level, tapping often to release air bubbles at intervals. When the mold is full, carefully place it on the wire rack.

Bake following the baking instructions for Liquid Sculpey®. Allow to cool completely before handling. When it is time to de-mold, you will most likely need to turn the mold inside out once again to release the dish.

The floor of my dish has a bit of blistering. This happens sometimes when the floor is much thinner than the walls and bakes unevenly. I removed as much of the blister as possible with scissors or a craft knife.

To make the floor of the dish smooth again, add a thin layer of the Amber Translucent LS.

Bake right side up one more time following the baking instructions.

Allow to cool completely before handling.
