These earrings feature a crescent moon paired with small compass stars, creating a simple celestial design. The clay pieces are set inside a gold bezel frame, which adds structure and a polished finish. The contrast between the moon, stars, and gold makes the details stand out clearly. Lightweight and eye-catching, this design brings a subtle celestial touch to any outfit. Time to complete: Sculpting takes approximately 30 minutes, 60 minutes of baking, and 5 minutes for assembly.

Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and
water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching
colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card
or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼"
(6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking
times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Mix a 1:1 ratio of cobalt and silver to create the base. (Reserve a small amount of the silver for later use in the project.)

Step 3

Roll out mixed clay on the pasta machine on setting 2. Place bezel frames in the clay and press down.

Step 4

Cut excess clay from around the bezel frame with the Exacto knife.

Step 5

Roll out ⅕ of the silver clay on the pasta machine on setting 2. Cut out (2) moon shapes.

Step 6

Place the moon on the base clay and gently press to adhere. Repeat for both earrings.

Step 7

Flatten a small piece of 18K gold clay with your finger and cut a compass star (four points) with the Exacto knife about ⅛ of an inch. Make (7) more compass stars, with
four being about ⅛ of an inch, two being ⅙ of an inch, and 2 being ¼ of an inch.

Step 8

Place the compass stars on the base clay in mirrored positions.

Bake/cure the clay according to directions in Step 1 above.

Step 9

Gently push the clay pieces out of the bezel. Spread a small amount of oven-bake clay adhesive on the inside of the bezel.

Step 10

Place the clay piece inside the bezel. Bake/cure again.

Step 11

Slide an eye pin through the pearl bead, then use the 1-step looper to create a loop on the other side. Repeat with the second pearl bead.

NOTE: If you don't own a 1-step looper you can create the loops by hand with round nose pliers.

Step 12

Step 13

Using the needle nose and flathead pliers, open a 4 mm jump ring and loop the bezel piece through. Close the jump ring and repeat with the other bezel piece.

Step 14

Open a 4 mm jump ring and loop one end of the pearl bead and the 4 mm jump ring connected to the bezel frame. Close jump ring and repeat with the other piece.

Step 15

Open a 4 mm jump ring and loop the other end of the pearl bead and the star topper post through. Close jump ring and repeat with the other piece.
