Sculpey Soufflé™ Cleverful Floral Earrings

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Roll out a small piece of the Soufflé™ Bluestone on a medium setting on a pasta machine or a little thinner than 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out two circles with the 1-1/4 inch cutter.  Set aside.

Cut equal portions of the Premo™ Gray Granite and the Soufflé™ Latte and mix 2 portions of the Gray Granite with 1 portion of Latte for the “planter”.

Cut one circle out using the 1-1/4 inch round cutter and cut this circle into equal halves.

Artist Tip – I like to use graphing index cards to help me align and cut straight.  I also use them to line up my earring components to place the holes for assembly.

Position the “pots” onto the background as shown.

Sheet out a small piece of the Soufflé Shamrock and use Exacto blade to cut out some long, medium and short leaves. Once you have your leaves/stems in place, set aside for now.

My favorite way to use the CreateAlong Ball Rollers is to sheet a small piece of clay and then cut a strip to add to the Ball Roller.  You can see that I have
put the pasta machine setting #3 on my roller, so I can remember what layer
thickness works best for each size Ball Roller.

I’ve added a short strip of Soufflé Canary to the ball roller.

I prefer to just press the top portion of the tool onto the bottom portion before I start rolling.

Gently place your thumbs on either side of the knob and roll back and forth a couple of times.

Open the roller and check out your perfect balls for the flower centers.

You can see that I am now using a #5 layer (fairly thin) for the Tiny Ball Roller (hence the #5 on the tool!). Since I need more of these balls, I’m using a longer strip of clay.

Once again, I gently pressed the top piece onto the bottom and rolled back and forth a couple of times to create my perfect little balls.

Now I can start building my flower!

I like to use a toothpick to add detail to my flower petals.

Add your Turnip petals to the design.  I decided to add a bit of whimsy
and add another Pumpkin flower dangling down.

Use the smallest circle cutter to create a circle and cut it in half for the top
portion of the earring.  I decided to add a Turnip flower to the center of each half circle. (Make sure to leave room for the assembly hole at the bottom of the half circle!)

Use the toothpick to add the holes for assembly.

Bake/cure as directed in Step 1 above. Allow to cool completely.

Once the baked/cured clay cooled we can add the post portion of each earring.  I used a tiny floral cutter for my post to help adhere it to the baked clay and cover the post. Press the post into one of the several holes in the CreateAlong Stud Puck™.  I prefer to use a small drop of Liquid Sculpey Oven Bake Adhesive or Clear to adhere my cured post top. 

Put the Stud Puck on your baking tray and bake again according to the directions in Step 1 above.  Allow to cool completely before removing from the puck. (NOTE: I also make plain top pieces as an option).

Here is my assembly layout.  I am using 8 mm Oval Jump rings but round jump rings will work as well!
