Embellish a mug for yourself, for gifting, for a special friend or family member. This simple design is so easy to make and can be adapted to any size or shape of mug. The oven bake clay design is glued on after baking to make sure it stays on your mug for a long time. It is waterproof, but it’s also art... so take care and hand-wash for long lasting enjoyment.

COMPLETION TIME:40 Minutes to make and bake.

ARTIST NOTE: Optional you can use Sculpey®III 2oz. White - 1 Bar if you prefer instead of the Ultralight. I like the fluffiness of Ultralight when I’m making clouds.

Project Instructions
    Getting Started:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

    Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Roll Turquoise Sculpey®III into a little rope no more than 1/4” thick. Bend it into a rainbow shape.
Use the Super Slicer to trim the bottom straight across making your first rainbow stripe about 1.25” tall.
Roll each Granny Smith, Lemonade, Just Orange, and Candy Pink into ropes that are the same thickness as the Turquoise. Layer the colors in the order shown and use gentle pressure to make sure the sides are all touching and the pieces are sticking to each other. Trim the bottoms again.
Lay the mug down using the handle as a kick stand. Bend your rainbow gently onto the side of the mug. Make sure it follows the shape of the mug perfectly.
Make fluffy clouds from White Ultralight clay. Press eight of them across the bottom of the rainbow and make sure they also form to the shape of the mug.
Make six more clouds and snuggle them under the first row of clouds. Bake the mug on its side with the rainbow draped over it following the baking instructions for Sculpey III®.
When the mug is completely cool, carefully pop the rainbow off of it with your fingertip. Put a little something under the handle so that the handle is being held parallel to the work surface.
Glue the rainbow centered onto the side of the mug. Let the mug rest with the handle propped up until the glue is completely dry. Remember to hand wash your mug after use to preserve the design.
