Soufflé Pink Lemonade Opal-Inspired Bracelet Cuff

Designed by Ilia Hernandez

For this project I wanted to explore how flexible polymer clay can be when paired with a structured base. I chose to design a bracelet cuff using a stainless steel grooved cuff bracelet. By pressing clay directly into the groove, I was able to create a smooth, professional-looking inlay that highlights the natural shimmer of added opal flakes. The result is a durable and elegant cuff that feels both handmade and elevated. TIME TO COMPLETION: 1 hour to make/bake

Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven
Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Condition and roll out Sculpey Soufflé Pink Lemonade on the thickest setting of a pasta machine (or with an acrylic roller). The sheet should be thin enough to press into the cuff groove while still holding its shape.

Step 3

Gently press the rolled clay sheet into the groove of the stainless steel cuff, working section by section until the channel is completely filled. Smooth the surface with your fingertips, using a small amount of Sculpey Clay Softener if needed to blend. Once the clay is in place, clean away any lint, fingerprints, or imperfections with a Q-tip dipped
in isopropyl alcohol.

Step 4

Sprinkle tiny opal flakes across the surface of the clay. Gently press them in with your fingertips to ensure they are embedded without sticking up. Arrange them so they catch light beautifully across the cuff.

Step 5

Bake/cure the cuff at 275°F (135°C) for 30 minutes directly on a baking tray. Let the cuff cool completely before handling, as the metal will be very hot.

Step 6

Once cooled, use acetone on a cotton swab to remove any residue or imperfections from the clay surface. Your bracelet cuff is now ready to wear!
