This adorable trinket dish was inspired by the playful charm of ribbons paired with the flexibility of polymer clay. The bright pink clay contrasts beautifully with a bold cheetah-print pattern and metallic gold rim, making it a statement piece that still feels practical. This project is perfect for beginners looking to experiment with shaping clay into functional art while also exploring painted surface design. TIME TO COMPLETION: About 60-75 minutes

Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven
Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking
times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE
OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Roll out the clay

Condition your block of Soufflé Pink Lemonade clay, then roll it through a pasta machine on the thickest setting (Atlas #0). Place the sheet of clay onto a smooth ceramic tile.

Step 3

Outline the bow shape

Use a ball stylus tool to lightly sketch the outline of a ribbon onto the clay sheet. This helps guide your cutting without leaving harsh lines.

Step 4

Cut out the ribbon with a sharp blade tool (or Sculpey Super Slicer), carefully cut along the outline to remove the ribbon shape from the clay sheet. Smooth edges gently with your fingers dipped in a little isopropyl alcohol.

Step 5

Shape the tray

Apply a small amount of Sculpey Clay Softener to a Q-tip and press gently along the ribbon’s edges to create soft indentations and curves. This helps the bow shape curve upward slightly, forming a shallow dish. Smooth the surfaces as needed with your fingertips.

Step 6

Add surface design

Using black acrylic paint and a small brush, paint irregular cheetah-print spots across the ribbon for a playful pattern.

Step 7

Add gold rim

Once dry, outline the ribbon with FolkArt metallic gold acrylic paint (or other paint of your choice) to add a polished rim effect.

Step 8

Bake

Bake the tray directly on the tile at 275°F (135°C) for 60 minutes. Allow it to cool completely before handling further.

Step 9

Finish

Sand edges if needed to remove any rough spots. Seal the piece with DecoArt DuraClear Ultra Matte Varnish (or varnish of your choice) for a subtle finish, or apply resin for a glossy, durable coating.
