Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area
appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking ( also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Sheet 1/4 bar each Black and White through the pasta machine on the thickest setting.

Step 3

Layer White on top of Black. You can trim the edges if you wish. Roll over the sheets
with the Clay Roller to seal them together. Press through the pasta machine on the thickest setting - both sheets together.

Step 4

Cut the striped sheet in half with the Clay Blade. Place one half on top of the other.
Roll to seal with Clay Roller.

Step 5

Cut the sheet in half again and pile on top of the other half to double the stripes.
Roll to seal with the Clay Roller.

Step 6

Cut one more time in half and pile again. Roll carefully one final time to seal with
the Clay Roller. You just made a striped cane for the top of the earrings!

Step 7

Carefully slice two 1/8” slices from the end of the cane.

Step 8

Use the 1” oval cutter to cut out one oval from each slice. Set these aside for now.

Step 9

Roll a rope from 1/16 bar of each Fluorescent Yellow, Fluorescent Pink, White, and Turquoise.

Step 10

Bundle the color ropes together as shown.

Step 11

Roll on the work surface with your hand so the colors bond together.

Step 12

Roll and twist.

Step 13

Continue to roll and twist to lengthen the rope.

Step 14

Fold the twisted rope in half twice.

Step 15

Roll and twist again to make even more stripes.

Step 16

Keep rolling to make longer.

Step 17

Coil the rope up like a shell.

Step 18

Roll the coil up in your hands into a ball.

Step 19

Flatten the ball with the Clay Roller to 1/8” thick.

Step 20

Cut the sheet in half.

Step 21

Cut out two 2” ovals along the cut edge so that part of the oval has a straight side.

Step 22

Cut a straight edge across the top of each oval.

Step 23

Use the 3/4” oval cutter to cut the centers out.

Step 24

Bring the striped buttons back from Step 8.

Step 25

Trim the bottoms off of the striped buttons so that they match the top of the
colorful pieces.

Step 26

Poke holes in each piece so they can be connected together later with jump rings. I
use the Blunt Point Tool for poking neat holes.

Bake according to the directions in Step 1 above for Premo™ Sculpey. Allow to cool completely before handling.

Step 27

Here is the layout for our earrings.

Step 28

Connect the pieces together with black jump rings using flat nose pliers.

Step 29

Glue the posts to the backs of the buttons as shown. Allow glue to dry completely.
