Sculpey III® Color Block Embossed Earrings

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands
after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6
mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking
times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For
best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Form small logs of all three colors. They do not have to be the same volume of clay but the same length make this marbling easy to work with. The logs in my photo vary from 1/4” thick to 3/8” thick. If you want one of the colors to be dominant, use a thicker amount of that color.

Group the logs together into a little bundle.

Roll and twist to form a striped rope.

Fold the rope in half and repeat rolling and twisting. You can repeat this step if you want the colors to twist or blend more.

When you are happy with the amount of marbling, fold the rope in half one more time. Make sure it is really stuck together at the seam.

Flatten the marbled rope to about 1/8” - 1/16” thick with the Clay Roller.

Make a sheet of Plum 1/8” thick with the Clay Roller.

Position the marbled clay over the top of the Plum clay along one edge.

Flatten both sheets together with the Clay Roller.

Smooth plastic kitchen wrap over the top of the sheet. This will help the cutter to not stick to the clay and creates a nicely beveled edge where the cutter cuts the clay.

Cut two shapes from the clay so that the shapes are half Plum and half marbled.

Carefully remove the plastic wrap.

Remove the inner circles from the shapes. Turn the shapes to the orientation that you would like for the finished look.

Remove 1/4 of the circles with the Clay Blade.

Bake following the baking instructions for Sculpey III®.

Allow to cool completely.
