Sculpey III® Sandalwood Bag Charm

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and
water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching
colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card
or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼"
(6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking
times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE
OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Condition one full bar of Sandalwood clay and ¼ bar of Jewelry Gold clay. Condition well and roll both colors into thick logs.

Twist the two clay colors together several times to create a marbled effect. Avoid overmixing, so the colors stay distinct.

From the marbled clay, separate a small piece. Use the larger portion to form a mushroom cap and shape the smaller piece into a mushroom stem.

Using a needle tool, texture the underside of the cap by dragging lines from the center outward, creating gill-like details.

Cut a small piece of jewelry wire. Insert it halfway into the stem, then attach the stem to the cap to add support and stability.

Roll balls of Coral clay in various sizes. Press them onto the mushroom cap and gently flatten to create the classic spotted mushroom look.

Screw an eye screw into the top center of the mushroom cap, twisting it securely into place before baking.

Cut ½ bar each of Plum, Coral, Berry, Jewelry Gold, and Sandalwood clay. Condition each color and roll into thick logs.

Slice several pieces from each log and roll them into round discs. Make the Jewelry Gold discs slightly flatter than the others to add variety.

Use the Sculpey Bead Maker to place each disc onto the curved bead shaper, forming smooth, even beads with perfect center holes.

Bake/cure all the pieces according to the directions in Step 1 above.

Choose your starter bead. Cut about one foot of stretchy cord. Tie a double knot at one end, loop the cord back through the bead center, and pull tight so the knot sits securely inside.

Continue adding beads to create a long-beaded strand, alternating colors until you reach your desired pattern and length.

Repeat the same double knot method from Step 12 this time tying the knot around a jump ring to finish the beaded keychain cord.

For the mushroom charm: add a jump ring and finish with a lobster clasp. Attach the lobster clasp to the O-ring.

Use jewelry pliers to open the jump ring on the beaded string, attach it to the same O-ring.
Add one large lobster clasp to the O-ring and close with pliers to complete the keychain.
