Sculpey Soufflé™ Curved Candle Holder

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6
mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the
baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take
longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE
MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Roll up lots of foil into a thick snake shape about 13-15 inches long.

Form the shape of the candle holder.

Cut foil strips and wrap them around each section of the candle holder base three times.

Squeeze to ensure the base remains tight. This will add thickness to the base. Continue for the rest of the shape base.

Make the end facing up a little shorter than the rest of the base to keep space for the candle later.

Knead the ultralight clay till it’s soft and workable.

Roll the ultralight clay to create a slab with an acrylic roller till it’s 3 mm thick using clay depth sticks.

Place the slab over the foil and trim off any excess. Blend the slab with your fingers to create a smooth clay base for the holder.

Gently squeeze where you applied the clay base to adhere it to the foil and get rid of air bubbles trapped in the crevices.

Continue Steps 6-7 for the rest of the candle holder base.

Close the ends by cutting off any excess and smooth out. Bake according to Step 1 above.

Roll the Sculpey Soufflé™ Succulent Clay on the thickest setting in the Clay conditioning machines to create several thick long slabs.

Cut the edges of a slab to clean up the edges and wrap around the longer end of the base and cut off any excess clay as shown in the photo. Blend the ends with your finger or a ball tool to smooth out.

Continue Step 11 for the rest of the base

Cut a wide slab about 3.5 inches tall (which may be different from the size of the candle).

Wrap the tealight in plastic wrap.

Place the tealight on the other end of the base and wrap the clay slab. Cut excess clay with an X-acto knife so the ends meet perfectly and snugly around the tealight. Carefully, blend the ends to smooth out the slab. Remove the tealight for the candle holder.

Place the second-largest circle disc on your clay extruder and extrude several long ropes of Succulent clay. Wrap each rope around the holder’s base leaving a length to create a place to set the tea light. Trim any excess from the top and bottom. Continue this until the ropes cover the base completely.

Note: You may need to trim the bottom of the holder so it can lay flat when it stands, as shown in the photo. Smooth out any rough patches.
