Adding Color Detail to Pet Bobbins with Sculpey Liquid Clays

If you have a pet that you adore, this project might be for you! Something that I make often are pet bobbins. Because our pets are unique, I came up with this idea to mimic the likeness of our furry best friends.

We will be making a cat portrait in this example project. Mould free-hand or use a cat shaped cutter on the polymer clay slab rolled at the thickest setting on the pasta machine.

Use the Liquid Sculpey® primary colours  to mix the custom shades that you need for your subject.

Use the needle tool to gently ‘paint’ on the features of the cat.

Roll a small ball of polymer clay mixed to mimic the color of the cat’s eyes and add more features to the cat’s face.

To layer the paint strokes for more depth, you may bake the piece after the first layer of liquid clay strokes have been applied, for 10-15 minutes in the oven, before applying another layer of strokes. This solidifies the initial layer so that it does not blend into the subsequent layers of liquid clay. Do this as many times as needed.

Paint on the iris of the cat, and you’re left with your final product! The benefit of using Liquid Sculpey® as opposed to traditional paint is that it would not rub or wash off, so your mini painting would last for a long time!

This idea can be applied to many other pets. I personally use them as bag pins, so I glue on pins with a clutch back to the polymer clay piece!
