Tips for Working With Liquid Polymer Clay

Before you work with any kind of polymer clay, it’s important to keep a few considerations in mind to ensure a seamless crafting experience. Here’s a few simple tips to get started!

1. Use Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are invaluable when working with polymer clay. Use them to clean your tools, work surface and remove the oily, waxy residue from your hands.

2. Invest in an Oven Thermometer

Cooking your clay pieces at the correct temperature is essential, and investing in an oven thermometer will help you achieve this. Because cooking times and temperatures vary based on the clay’s brand and thickness, we suggest checking out our FAQ page.

3. Stay Away From Spray Paint, Nail Polish and Solvents

It may have crossed your mind to use clear nail polish as a glaze on your Sculpey® creations. Don’t do it! The solvent in nail polish will dissolve and soften polymer clay over time, causing it to become gooey and sticky. This is also the case with most paints in spray cans, solvent-based paints and varnishes, as they will either remain sticky or degrade your clay.
