Getting StartedPolymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Roll a sheet of Black clay on the # 3 setting of the Clay Conditioning Machine. With each of the colors, hand roll snakes about ¼” diameter. Make some of the snakes a little thicker and some a little thinner. Place the colors randomly along the Black clay.
Repeat a second layer of Black and the color snakes, but do not repeat the same color arrangement. Arrange the second layer differently. Add a medium thick sheet of White.
Compress the cane, consolidating the clay and eliminating the spaces between colors. It’s ok for the lines to get wavy and the Black to fill in between the colors.
Reduce the cane dimensions and increase the length. Cut the piece into two pieces and restack.
Reduce again, cut in half and stack again. This should result in a cane with four layers of the same type of pattern.
Roll a snake of Black clay about ½ diameter and long enough to go around the pop can. Cut thin slices of the cane and lay them on the Black. Roll the pattern slices in until smooth. Slightly flatten the snake and press it to the aluminum can. Trim the ends to just meet.
Bake according to the instructions above and allow to slightly cool.
While the clay is still slightly warm, remove from the can. Add a drop of super glue between the cut ends and glue them tight.
Cut additional slices from the cane and wrap them around the bangle, covering the joined ends and also wrapping at a second point around the bangle. Bake again according to the instructions above and allow to completely cool.
