Getting started: Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 degrees F (130 C) for 15 minutes per ¼” (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use and oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult. •Begin by preheating oven to 275 degrees F (130 C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Roll a large ball of Magic Glitter clay approximately 3” in diameter. Press your thumb in the center and create a pinch pot with your fingers. Keep the edges at least ¼” thick. Create a planter pot large enough and tall enough to accommodate your small plant. The planter shown is 2 ¾” in diameter and 3” tall. Plant is in a 2” pot.Smooth the pot as best as you can. Make sure it sits evenly. Bake according to directions and allow to cool. Set aside.
Create the head of the unicorn by rolling a ball of Magic Glitter clay approximately 2” in size. Roll two ball ½” in size for the ears.
Flatten one end of the ball to attach to your pot and then shape a head and nose on the other side. Once you are happy with your head and nose shape you can attach it to your pot. Add some Sculpey Bake & Bond to the area where you are attaching for extra strength. Press the flat side on the planter. The top of the head should line up with the top of the planter. Smooth the clay all around the head and marry the clay together onto the pot.Make the two balls for the ears into teardrop shapes and slightly flatten. Attach these to the top right and left of the head. Smooth the seams so the ears become one with the head. Use the end of your paintbrush to make indents in each ear. Use the end of your paintbrush to give the nose two nostril holes. Use the pointed end of your Sculpey 5 in 1 tool to make a happy line for the mouth.
Roll a ball of Shine On Glitter approximately ¾” in size. Roll into a cone shape and twist to make the horn. Attach the horn at the top of the head with a small amount of Sculpey Bake & Bond.Roll one snake of each of the following colors approximately ¼” thick by 2 ½” long: Cotton Candy Pearl, Cloud Pearl, Fantasy Pearl, and Confetti Glitter. Point the ends of each color snake. Gently press the four different colored snakes together and twist to make a tail. Flatten one end and attach to the pot on the opposite side of the head with some Sculpey Bake & Bond. Add some Liquid Sculpey to the pointy end of the tail as well and press onto the pot to secure. Tail should look like a loop.Roll one snake each of the same four colors again this time making them 1/8” thick and 2” long. Point one end of each. Twist them together as you did for the tail. Wrap this piece around the horn.Time to adorn the horn with some flowers. Make 3 roses by rolling a snake of Cotton Candy Pearl ¼” by 3” long. Run this snake through your clay machine on the #3 setting. Cut into 3 equal pieces that are 1” long. Spiral the flat piece and gently fan the edges to make a rose. Pinching the base helps to fan the spiral as well. When done use your knife to cut away pinched excess and make a flat bottom for attaching.Run a small amount of Fantasy Pearl and Cloud Pearl through the clay machine on the #3 setting. Use the larger Premo! Flower cutter and cut out 2 Fantasy Pearl flowers. Roll tiny balls of Confetti Glitter and press in the centers of each. Use the Kemper ¾” flower cutter and cut out 3 or more little Cloud Pearl flowers. Roll tiny balls of Fantasy Pearl and press into centers.Roll two small balls of Confetti Glitter clay. Use the bottom of your paintbrush and make round indents into these balls.Attach the flowers on the mane that wraps around the horn. Use a dot of Liquid Sculpey on each as you attach.
Bake according to directions. Allow to cool.Run your planter under water and use the 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper to sand your piece smooth. Circular sanding works best. Be careful when sanding to avoid the tail and mane and flowers. Only sand the pot and head. Sand until nice and smooth. When finished rinse and pat dry with a paper towel. To finish use your acrylic paints to paint the face of the unicorn. Black eyes with lashes. Pink cheeks, nostrils, and inside of the ears. Paint the mouth line Black. Add tiny White dots to the eyes to give the unicorn a happy twinkle.
