Getting Started:Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.Baking:Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME
Sheet out about 1/3 a package of conditioned Souffle Jade on the second widest setting on the clay conditioning machine. Place on the small sheet of paper.
Sheet out about 1/3 package of the conditioned Souffle Bluestone on the #4 or second from thinnest setting on the clay conditioning machine.
Press the largest of the Etch n’ Pearls into the dampened sponge (the moisture acts as a mold release for the clay). Punch out a polka dot of the Bluestone clay by pressing and twisting the Etch n’ Pearl. Press lightly onto the center of the Jade background clay.
Continue to add the polka dots around the center dot, placing them as close together as possible. I kind of gently nudge them into place.
Continue to add the polka dots in each little intersection space. NOTE: it’s a good idea to gently press the largest of the Sculpey circle cutters onto the clay to give you an idea of how far to fill in with the polka dots!
Use the circle cutter to check that you have filled out the space entirely. Don’t press down yet!
Sheet out a small piece of the conditioned Souffle Cinnamon clay on the second from widest setting. (don’t forget to use the damp sponge!) Use the smallest Etch n’ Pearl to punch and twist out a pearl. Gently press this pearl into the center polka dot. (I aim to press them about half way into the polka dot). Unlike the polka dots, these pearls can be added randomly. Just don’t forget one!
Once the entire section is filled with the pearls, use the largest of the circle cutters to press and twist through the clay. Set aside the remaining clay for now.
Preheat the Hollow Bead Maker on the top of your oven as it also preheats. Place the completed clay on the largest bump on the Hollow Bead Maker and gently press into place with the palm of your hand. The heated Hollow Bead Maker will grab the clay and hold it in place. Don’t press too hard or you will flatten the pearls!
Make the Jan Montarse Easy Back from a small piece of the remaining conditioned Jade clay rolled through on the second from widest setting. I texture my clay with a small piece of dampened stair tred material (it goes right through the clay conditioning machine with the clay!) Use the middle cutter in the circle cutter set to punch out a circle of clay. Use the teardrop cutter from the Mini Cutter Geometric set to cut two small notches at the top of the circle. Place the completed bail on the smaller bump on the Hollow Bead Maker as shown. Bake according to the directions above. After the clay has baked and cooled, add the instant glue to the back edge of the bail (not in the two notches though!) and gently press into place on the back of the pendant.
To create a pendant using a Skinner Blend: Select two colors of clay – I’ve used Souffle Turnip and Bluestone. Sheet out on the second from widest setting. Cut the Turnip in half and overlap with the Bluestone as shown. Fold the top to the bottom, lining up the small strip of Bluestone and roll through the clay conditioning machine, keeping the Bluestone strip vertical. Fold top to bottom and repeat until the blend has smoothed out. Roll out on the second from thinnest setting, again keeping that Bluestone streak vertical.
Sheet out a small piece of the Souffle Cinnamon on the second from widest setting. Using the large Etch n’ Pearl, punch out a polka dot out from the Bluestone streak. Add this polka dot to the center of the Cinnamon.
Punch out the next polka dots from just below the center and carefully add them around the center dot so that the bluish edge of the dot is next to the all Bluestone dot.
Move a little further into the blend for the next round. Each round will be little further form the center until the last round is all Turnip. I added Cinnamon pearls to the tops of these polka dots, using a second from widest sheet of clay. Use the large circle cutter to cut out the shape (note in the video I cut out the circle first before adding the pearls). Place on the Hollow Bead Maker as above and bake according to the directions above. Don’t forget to make your Jan Montarse Easy Back!
Glue the Easy Back into place on the back of the pendants.
