Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 15 minutes per ¼” (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use and oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be done by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 degrees F (130 degrees C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Prepare the tray by painting all the exposed sides and edges that will not be covered with clay. Paint just inside the flat bottom 1/4”. Allow the paint to dry completely
Spread a thin layer of Silver Liquid Sculpey® (LS) in the bottom of the tray. Set the try aside while you prepare the clays. The LS will seep into the wood grain slightly making a nice bond between the clays and the wood.
Mix each color with Silver Sculpey®III 1 part to 1 part. Sheet each of the mixed colors through the clay conditioning machine on the thickest setting. Cut out as many large triangles as you can from each sheet using the Large Triangle Mosaic Cutter.
Condition the scraps and sheet each color separately through the clay conditioning machine on the thickest setting again. Cut out as many small triangles as you can from each sheet using the Small Triangle Mosaic Cutter.
Gather up all the remaining scraps and press them into a ball.
Roll and twist the ball to make a thick striped rope.
Press the striped rope through the clay conditioning machine on the thickest setting. Fold the sheet and press it through again to mute the stripes.
Cut as many triangles as you can from the striped sheet.
Start in the middle of the tray placing triangles in a random pattern. Leave at least 1/16” space between all the triangles.
Continue filling in all the space in the bottom of the tray with large and small triangles. You can move the triangles around as needed and don’t worry if the space lines vary some. Trim triangles as needed to fill in the spaces around the edges. Bake the tray following the baking instructions for Soufflé.
Add several drops of Liquid Clay Softener to the Silver LS to thin it. Stir the Softener in completely and add drops as needed. You want the Silver LS to be a thin consistency that will be easy to squirt in between the triangles into the spaces. When the tray is completely cool, carefully squirt thinned Silver LS in all the spaces between the tiles. Fill in all the lines completely and bake the tray again following the baking instructions for Soufflé.
When the tray is completely cool, pour the Sculpey® Glossy Glaze in a small pool in the center of the tray. Spread the glaze by tilting the tray.
Add more glaze as needed to make a thin layer over all the clay pieces. The glaze will look foggy at first. Allow the glaze to dry completely.
