Getting Started:Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 15 minutes per ¼” (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use and oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be done by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 degrees F (130 degrees C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.The Liquid Sculpey® in this project can be baked at 300 degrees F but only when it is alone in the mold. When used as an antiquing medium over the Soufflé, the LS should only be baked at 275 degrees F so that the Soufflé doesn’t burn.
Measure your wrist with a tape measure and add 1/2” to the measurement. Write this information down.Sheet Igloo through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Make the sheet as long as necessary to accommodate your wrist measurement.Sheet Cowboy through the pasta machine to the fourth thickest setting. Make the sheet as long as the Igloo sheet.
Mount the Igloo sheet to the Cowboy sheet with the acrylic clay roller. Make sure no air bubbles are trapped between the layers. Position the large mandala shape on the clay so that one petal is pointing to 12 o’clock and one petal is pointing to pointing to 6 o’clock. Using the Silicone Mandala Mold like a texture sheet, impress the image of the largest mandala in the center of the double strip of clay using heavy pressure from your fingertips. Carefully remove the mold to reveal the texture.
Use a ruler to mark and measure a strip that is as wide as the mandala in the clay. Cut out the strip with the mandala right in the center and as long as your length of clay.
Use the ruler to lightly mark a perpendicular lines on either side of the mandala. Position the Art Deco Leaves texture right up to this line and carefully impress the texture as deeply as possible. Use hand pressure at first to bite into the clay, then use the Acrylic Clay Roller to make the texture deep and even. Repeat the texture on the other side of the mandala as well.
Use the 2” circle cutter to lightly mark curved edges along the top and bottom of the mandala.
Use the 1.75” circle cutter to cut away equal amounts of the clay strip as shown.
Mark the vertical center point in the Art Deco Leaf Textured ends. Use the Flexible Super Slicer to cut from the circle edge to the vertical center point in each end. Simply hold the Flexible blade as flexed as necessary and make the cut from point to point
Repeat Step 8 on the other end to match. Measure the length of the cuff now from tip to tip. This measurement should be the length of your wrist (minus the extra 1/2”). If it is too long, bend the Flexible Super Slicer and make the Step 8 cuts again. If the cuff is not long enough, you can stretch it just slightly. Roll a rope of Igloo to 1/4” thick. Border the entire bracelet with the rope and make sure it attaches with finger pressure. Add little details in the mandala area with the 2mm ball tool. Cut out the center of the mandala with the Large Etch ‘n Pearl.
Carefully bend the cuff around your glass form. I use an empty glass water bottle that I have saved and kept for just this reason. Mine has printed writing on it but I know the writing will not transfer to my piece because I’ve tested it many times.
On the back side, my bracelet it just a bit too long but that is ok. I’m allowing the clay to overlap itself here but I’m not sealing the pieces together. One side is just barely laying on top of the other. For your design, it’s okay if the cuff doesn’t touch at this point or if it just meets together. The important thing is to get the clay conformed to the curve because it will always return to this shape after being placed on the wrist.
Bake the clay on the glass water bottle using whatever means you need to keep the clay away from the baking surface and to keep the bottle from rolling. I prop my bottle neck on the side of a shallow baking pan that is narrow enough to keep the bottle from rolling. That way the cuff is only touching the bottle while it is held above the baking surface. When the bottle and the clay are completely cool, carefully remove the cuff from the bottle. The cuff should spring back to the shape it was cured in whenever it is resting.
In a silicone baking cup, mix up a quarter sized drop of Bronze Liquid Sculpey® (LS) with three tiny drops of Black LS. Mix together completely. Dab some of the mixture onto your cuff. Smooth the LS into all the textured details with your fingertips. Remove excess LS from the raised surfaces with paper towels. Bake the Cuff again to set the LS. While the cuff is baking, fill the next largest mandala shape in the Silicone Mandala Mold with the remaining tinted Bronze LS. Bake this piece in the silicone mold. When it is completely cool, remove it from the mold by carefully flexing the mold.In a silicone baking cup, mix up a dime sized amount of Peacock Pearl LS with a drop of Bronze LS and a drop of Black LS. Mix these together well. Fill the next largest mandala shape in the Silicone Mandala Mold with the tinted Peacock Pearl. Bake this piece in the silicone mold. When it is completely cool, remove it from the mold by carefully flexing the mold.
While the mandalas are baking, cut 1” from the piece of faux leather cord. Fold the remaining 6” cord in half, pressing the loop through the hole in the center of the cuff. Thread the 1” piece through the loop and pull the tails ends tightly so that the loop is caught on the back side by the 1” piece.
Thread the tails of the faux leather cord through the two baked mandalas and through a large holed wooden bead. Tie off the cord with an overhand knot and trim the ends. Secure the knot with super glue gel if you prefer.
Designer’s Note - When I’m all finished with a project, I fill my mandala mold with any remaining tinted LS and bake the pieces to save for later projects. Then I bake the silicone cups with the residue of the LS in them. When they are completely cool, the residue can be peeled out of the cups and discarded. Wipe out the cups with paper towels and store to use again later. The silicone cups I use are from the baking department and designed for using as cupcake liners.
