Getting Started:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.
Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). For best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Sheet out the conditioned Premo Accents Grey Granite on the second to the widest setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Lightly spray the Safety Tred (or course sandpaper) with water and place it face down on the clay. Use the acrylic roller to press the Tred firmly into the clay. Remove the Tred and trim the clay to the edges of the textured clay. Set aside.
Sheet a section of the Black clay through on the second to widest setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Lightly spray the sheet of shelf liner (NOTE: this product is double sided, so try both sides of your sample to get the texture as shown! I notched the top of my sheet so I know which side to use). Place the selected side of the shelf liner against the clay and roll it back through the Clay Conditioning Machine. Remove the shelf liner. Cut a straight edge on the textured clay so that the lines are horizontal. Set aside.
Sheet out about 1/3 block of the Antique Gold (regular Gold can be substituted as well) on the second to the widest setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Set aside. Sheet out about ½ block of the Black clay on the WIDEST setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Position the textured Grey Granite clay on this sheet of Black. Cut a small strip of the Antique Gold clay about 3/8 inch wide and snug it up against the Grey Granite.
Snug the textured Black clay up against the other side of the metallic strip. Position the cutter as shown and press firmly through the layers of clay. Make sure that you have that bottom layer of Black underneath the section of clay you wish to cut out!
Repeat for the other three coasters, substituting the different metallic colors (or use the same color!)
Bake as directed above and your coasters are ready to use!
