Getting Started:Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 15 minutes per ¼” (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use and oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be done by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 degrees F (130 degrees C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Roll a rope of Opal to a width of 3/8” thick. Cut the rope into nine 3/8” long pieces. This is the way I make uniform size beads by rolling a rope as thick as I want and then cutting a same size length off of the rope for each bead.
Roll the Opal pieces into balls in the palms of your hands. If you prefer to poke the holes before baking, do so with a needle tool. Poke through one direction until the point emerges from the opposite side. Then pull the needle tool out and poke it back through from the other direction. This will push the little stray piece of clay that comes out of the hole back inside the bead. NOTE: I prefer to drill my beads after baking with a Dremel tool. I feel that it gives a more uniform hole and does not distort the bead shape while it is soft.
Roll an equal size rope and cut nine pieces from the Twinkle Twinkle as well. Roll them into beads and pre-drill if desired.
Bake all the beads. When they are completely cool, drill them with a pin drill or Dremel if you did not pre-drill.Thread the gossamer floss onto a needle so it’s doubled and tie a knot to secure. String the beads as shown with the crystal bead and bead caps falling between the light and dark beads. Trim the ends. Pull the knot inside one of the beads to hide it.
