What a fun and useful way to chart your children’s growth from year to year! These useful magnets can help organize a family’s to-do’s with a little ta-da!
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
On the back of a cereal box, trace your child’s hand. Cut out traced image with scissors.
Condition and roll out a sheet of Premo! (Any color.) I made mine between 1/4” and 1/8 “ thick. If using the Sculpey Clay Conditioning Machine, I used the thickest setting.
Place the cardboard hand on top of the clay, and using the corner of a Sculpey Super Slicer, cut the clay out around the cardboard template.
Look carefully at the clay hand, and using a Sculpey Super Slicer clean up any rough edges or cuts. Smooth with your fingers.
Lightly dampen a Sculpey Texture Maker sheet with a moist paper towel. Press firmly down onto clay hand. Burnish back of texture sheet firmly to make a good impression. Lift gently to reveal texture on clay hand.
Using alphabet stamps, press child’s name into clay hand. Bake according to directions above.
Paint cooled clay hand all over with acrylic paint. Using a paper towel, wipe off the high areas, leaving paint only in the depressed parts of the texture pattern filled with paint.
If desired, use a Signo Uniball Broad White gel pen to highlight areas or add pattern to your piece.
Finally, using E6000 glue, attach 2 round disc magnets to the back of your hand and let dry.
