Getting Started Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.Condition one block of Original Sculpey until it’s soft and smooth. Start to flatten this with your hands beginning a square shape. Place on the Work Mat and use your acrylic roller to roll the clay flat. Keep rolling and stretching until you can fit your puzzle template on top. The thickness will probably be about a ¼” thickness.
Cut out the puzzle piece using your craft knife tracing it along the edges. When finished remove template and excess clay. Smooth edges with your finger.
Using the 3” circle template cut out a circle in the center of the puzzle piece. Remove excess clay and smooth the edges.
Roll out sheets of all the Sculpey III colors. Using the graduated cutter set cut out multiple circles of all different colors. You will be layering these so keep that in mind as you make the circles. Bake according to the above directions and allow to cool.
Using some fine grit sandpaper smooth edges and any rough spots on your puzzle piece.
Paint the puzzle piece with desired color. Allow to dry and give it a second coat. For some colors you may even need a third coat. Allow paint to dry for several hours and then apply your Sculpey Gloss with a brush. Allow to dry.
Glue the Circles onto your puzzle piece.
Tape your child’s school photo to the back.
If you have more than one child you can make these and link them together like a puzzle (*note, may have to sand edges to get pieces to fit together just right)
