Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Start by painting your wooden box and setting it aside to dry. For this project we chose to paint it white and applied two coats of paint.
While the wooden box is drying start to condition your clay. Starting with your lightest color, soften clay with your hands. Then roll each color flat with your plastic roller.
Gather the cutter shapes you wish to use. We chose a mini heart, butterfly, 2 circles and a crinkle heart.
Roll the green clay and begin to cut out shapes. Cut out 8 circles.
Make one white snake and one hot pink snake. Twist them together, this will create a marbled look.
Roll the marbled clay out and cut out 8 mini hearts with cutters.
Roll out hot pink and cut out 1 crinkle heart – this will be used for the message on the top of the box.
Continue to roll Pink, Purple, and Orange color clays and cut out different shapes until you have your desired amount.
With your left over purple clay, condition it and create 4 small balls. Press each ball into the Sculpey Letters & Numbers Mold to spell I and MOM. With a blade trim the excess clay so that the clay is even with the mold. Adult assistance required. *Tip- To easily remove your letters from your mold, pop your mold in the freezer for a couple of minutes. This will firm up the clay and you can ‘pop’ the clay pieces out like an ice cube.
Add all of your pieces to a lined baking sheet and bake as directed.
Once all baked pieces have cooled it’s time to assemble your box! Using craft glue, apply a drop of glue to the back of each piece and apply with medium pressure to your box. We got creative and layered pieces, you can decorate your box however you wish!
On the top of your box spell out I <3 MOM with your clay pieces.
Allow pieces to completely dry before wrapping. Fun tip - you can create a card and use any leftover clay pieces to decorate it!
