Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper or disposable foil. Wash hands after use.
Knead the air dry clay in your hands until it is a smooth and even consistency. If you notice the clay cracking around the edges, lightly mist it with a bit of water to help smooth the clay.

Use your fingers to press the texture sheet into the surface of the clay and use firm pressure to achieve a deep texture. Gently remove the texture sheet.
Lay the barrette template on top of the textured clay. Use the flexible blade to follow the sides of the template and cut away the excess clay.
Gently form the textured clay cut out over the top of the metal barrette finding. Leave the clay on top of the finding until it is completely dry so it will dry in the curved shape of the barrette finding.
When the clay is completely dry, paint the entire clay piece with turquoise acrylic paint. Allow the turquoise color to dry and then use a very fine brush to paint the crevices with black acrylic paint. You can add Sculpey matte or glossy glaze to the finished piece if you’d like.
