Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) for 15 minutes per ¼” (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use and oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be done by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275 degrees F (130 degrees C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
I used left over clay scraps from the Festive Beaded Necklace. Bundle up scraps or pieces of each of the colors. Knead them together slightly so they stick to each other and marble a bit.
Roll them up into a smooth ball.
Roll and twist into a log about 1/4” thick. Using scrap clay is the best way to make really random striped logs. Set the log aside for now.
Make a flat 3/4” disk of Black Cat for each hair pin you would like to make. Embed the top of a Bobbie pin into each one.
Add super thin pieces of Wicked Green Glow for the legs. Add eight legs to each disk.
From the twisted rope, slice off a piece for the body and a smaller piece for the head. Just experiment with the sizing that you like. Add these in place over the legs and holding the top of the Bobbie pin in place. Pinch a point to the body as you put it in place.
Repeat to make as many hair pins as you like. Bake the hair pins following the baking instructions for Sculpey®III. When they are completely cool, they are ready to wear. Style hair with other elastics, ties, or undercoated pins. Then slide these into hair style gently for spooky effects.
