Blank twist pen
Clear, quick drying glue
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Create Skinner Blends using 1/3 of each color and White (1/3 of a block per blend). (http://sculpey.com/create/how-tos/techniques/skinner-blend )
Once your sheets are evenly blended create 3 skinner blend canes. Roll them very tightly and reduce the canes one by one, working from the middle to the outer edges until they all are about ¼” in diameter.
Cut each cane into 5 pieces and put them side by side in a very random order, alternating the colors. Flatten them with your Acrylic Roller to form a sheet that will fit thru the widest setting of your Clay Conditioning Machine. Roll the sheet on the widest setting; the round canes will deform into triangles and random shapes but that is OK, all that matters is that whatever the canes do, they do it all the way through the sheet from one end to the other.
Thin this sheet further by using your Clay Conditioning Machine at setting #3, cut it in half and put one half on top of the other, mirroring it. Pass this stacked sheet of clay thru your Clay Conditioning Machine again at setting #1 and you will see the intricate design form.
Cut your sheet in 1” stripes and stack them in a mirrored order to form a short but wide stack, taking care to align the lines of the forming design.
Now you can cut thin slices off this stack and decorate a twist pen (per pen manufacturers’ directions) and a purse hanger to create a very elegant set to go with your favorite purse.
Bake the pen and purse hanger as directed above. When the purse hanger is cool pop out the clay and put some clear, fast drying glue in the finding and press the decorative clay disc back in place.
To create a shine on your piece, sand the surface lightly with 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper and buff with a soft cloth or apply Sculpey Gloss before gluing the disc in place.
