Have you ever had one of those days where nothing you are working on is coming out right? All you want to do is tear your hair out, throw your clay out the window, bang your head on your work table, or maybe all of the above. Don’t give up! If this is something new take moment to consider a different approach. If this is something you’ve done hundreds of times before walk away and count to 10, or 1000 depending on how frustrated you are (some days I wonder just how long it would take me to count to a million). At the worst you have probably added to your stash of scrap clay. I swear I have a dump truck worth of scrap clay and let’s face it, it is impossible to find someone to give it away to, which means we all have days where nothing is working out quite right.
Give Your Clay Creation a Break
Most of the time the best thing you can do is just set the project to the side for a little bit. Take the dog for a walk, work on a different project, or even just come back to it tomorrow. Giving yourself a moment to shake it off and come back with a fresh perspective or just plain calmed down can make all of the difference in the world. I personally like to glare at my clay and remind it of who’s in charge, I then let that message sink in while I go get a glass of water. Crazy I know but it usually helps. You’ve just got to find what works for you so you can keep calm and clay on.
