Shirley started working (playing) with polymer clay in 1985. Since her first 1" seasonal/holiday bear collection that she sold through a shop in Old Sacramento, CA, she was hooked! Now she has many years of experience teaching her original techniques through her book, "Polymer Clay Mixed Media Jewelry", at retreats, teaching workshops and doing demonstrations. After appearing on a few episodes of The Carol Duvall show, The Creative Life (on PBS) and HSN, she has had the opportunity to become the AM Northwest TV morning show's "craft expert", demonstrating a different craft every month for 12 years. She demonstrates art and craft techniques with a variety of mixed media materials, although she admits that polymer clay is her passion.
Shirley has a website at www.shirleyrufener.com that’s been up since 2004. She has uploaded her TV show projects with instructions and photos and in the last few years has added her actual AMNW TV videos to view for free, any time. On her site she sells polymer clay, clay accessories and molds and a variety of other art and craft products through her business, SpumoniDesigns. She also sells her art and supplies on Etsy at www.spumoni.etsy.com and digital art images including digi scrapbook and papercraft images at www.digitalspumoniart.etsy.com.
Shirley is a lifetime CPD (Certified Professional Demonstrator) through the Craft and Hobby Association and a freelance designer. She has demonstrated at trade shows such as CHA and Stitches. Her projects have been displayed in the CHA Designers Showroom, as well as graced the walls and tabletop displays of company booths of manufacturers she has designed for.
Shirley has written five fashion oriented craft booklets, two of them on polymer clay jewelry, has co-authored a booklet on air-dry clay accessories and has contributed projects to over a dozen other booklets. Her projects have appeared in dozens of magazine articles, some have even made it on the covers! Her how-to articles have been featured in Polymer Café (her “Artlamp” was the cover project for the Premier issue), Altered Couture, Haute Handbags, Doll Designs, Jewelry Design, Quick & Easy Crafts, Wearable Wonders, Wearable Crafts and Southwest Crafts.
Shirley believes that everyone is creative and should try new things until they find a creative outlet. She loves teaching others the fun of crafting as a hobby, to create handmade gifts or even turning their hobby into a business. She shares, that “if people can earn a living at what they love to do, they will never have to work again”. Shirley enjoys living on the beautiful Oregon Coast with her husband Dwayne. She will always be a wife and mother first, to her very talented daughter Joy, an Art Therapist and her computer genius son, Daniel.
