A battery operated tea light adds a Halloween glow to this unusual witch’s hat.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1
After conditioning the Black clay roll to 1/4" thickness. Using the Super Slicer and the template cut out the top part of the hat.
Step 2
Use the small star cutter and cut out several stars in the hat piece.
Step 3
To remove fingerprints from the clay piece, press a paper towel over the clay and lift up. Repeat until fingerprints are gone. This gives a little texture also.
Step 4
Bring the sides of the hat together, pressing the seam lightly to seal it. You should have a cone shape. NOTE: At this point you want to be sure that your tea light will fit in the opening of the hat. You can adjust it now, if it does not.
Step 5
Using the remainder of the rolled out sheet of Black clay, cut out a 2" wide strip to make the brim of the hat. Make a long length to slightly ruffle and to go around the bottom to make the brim.
Step 6
Roll a sheet of conditioned Just Orange clay into a ¼” sheet. Cut a 1/4" strip of this sheet of clay. Run the strip around the seam where the brim meets the top hat piece. Cut out some orange stars and place on the brim and on the ribbon.
Step 7
Make a couple of snips or cuts in the brim of the hat to look "worn" or "old". Curl the edges of the hat upward with your finger.
Step 8
Create the spider - Roll out a 1/4" ball of Black clay for the head and then another ball slightly larger for the body. Roll out four skinny snakes of clay and press to the underneath of the spider's body. Roll out two tiny balls of Just Orange clay and use a toothpick to press into the head of the spider for the eyes.
Step 9
Bend the spider's legs upward. Place a drop of Translucent Liquid Sculpey on top of the witch’s hat and then position the spider.
Step 10
Bake the entire project at 275 °F for 30 minutes. Cool completely and place the tea light in the hat. HAVE FUN!
