Vincent Van Gogh Texture Tile

This project is a great way to teach students about the art and techniques of Vincent Van Gogh.

Getting Started

Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Motivation

Discuss the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. Have students list the characteristics of his artwork, especially the use of texture.

Project Directions

Have each student select a Van Gogh painting to base their tile on. Demonstrate how to use Sculpey to create the slab, (rolling out the clay using an acrylic roller or brayer). Students should then create smaller slabs, coils, and rolls to emphasize the most important elements of the painting. Sculpey tools may be used to add additional texture. Bake as directed on package. Students may then use watered down acrylic paint to create a wash effect on their tile.
