Swirly Frames

Time to Complete: About an Hour

Two easy techniques are combined to make this playful frame. Coil the swirls, roll the balls, and voila! It's also a great project for using leftover clay!

The instructions are for a frame that is predominately Sedona with Antique Gold highlights. However, there is plenty of clay for two frames, with the second frame being predominantly Antique Gold with Sedona highlights.

Step 1

Condition all clay, one color at a time, by kneading in your hands until soft and smooth. Roll the Sedona between your hands and the work surface into a long coil. To make the coil long, place the coil on the table and, starting in the middle, gently roll the coil back and forth. Slowly move your hands out towards the edges until the coil is about 1/4” in diameter. Wrap sections of the coil into various size swirls ranging from about 1/4” to 1” in diameter as shown in the picture.

Step 2

Arrange the swirl shapes on the frame, covering the entire area. Place a dot of Bake & Bond™ beneath each swirl.

Step 3

Roll tiny balls of Sedona and fill any gaps between swirls and on the edges.

Step 4

Using the round end from the Clay Tool Variety Set, flatten the tops of the Sedona tiny balls on the interior of the frame. Leave the tiny balls along the edges rounded.

Step 5

Using the Antique Gold, make many tiny balls and place them over the flattened Sedona balls.

Step 6

Push the Antique Gold tiny balls into place using the largest concave end from the Etch ‘n Pearl tools. This will keep the top of the ball rounded while firmly setting the clay.

Step 7

Coat the Antique Gold accent balls with Glossy Glaze.

Step 8

Bake clay and frame at 275º F for 30 minutes.
