Make these big components for the kids to use to decorate the snowmen they make this winter.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1 Coal
Divide your Black into 3 pieces. One piece will be 1/2 of the Black and the other two pieces should be 1/4 each. Roll each up into a ball and then flatten them. They should not be perfect circles because, remember, this is supposed to look like coal.
Step 2 Coal
Using the clay tool, make random dents all over the top of your coal pieces. See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Cheeks
Divide the Ballerina in half. Roll each half into a ball and flatten each ball into a cheek.
Step 2 Cheeks
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Eyes
Slice a very small amount of Black off and set it aside. Divide the rest of the Black into two equal pieces. Shape these into an egg shape. Flatten each shape, stretching and shaping it into a flat oval.
Step 2 Eyes
Slice a very small amount of White off and set it aside. Divide the rest of the White into two equal pieces. Shape these into an egg shape. Flatten each shape, stretching and shaping it into a flat oval. Place them on top of the black ovals.
Step 3 Eyes
Divide 1 oz. of French Blue in half. Flatten each half into the bottom of each eye for the iris. Using the Black that you set aside in step 1, place a smaller Black circle into the center of each iris. Using the white that you set aside in step 2, place a little White circle off center on each pupil.
Step 4 Eyes
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Carrot Nose
2 oz. will make a nose that is about 3" long. 4 oz. will make a nose that is 3-1/2" to 4" long. Shape the Just Orange into a thick carrot shape that is flat on the bottom.
Step 2 Carrot Nose
Use the tool to indent marks in the sides of the carrot.
Step 3 Carrot Nose
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Snowflake Button
Make a ball out of the French Blue and then flatten it into a large disk. Make a six pointed snowflake in the middle with coils of White.
Step 2 Snowflake Button
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Violet Square Button
Make a ball out of the Violet colored clay and then flatten it into a large square. Trim the edges to make a "perfect" square.
Step 2 Violet Square Button
Roll up the Violet scraps that were trimmed off. Roll into a long coil. Border each edge of the button with the rope. Trim it to fit.
Step 3 Violet Square Button
Poke four large holes in the button with the clay tool. Poke each hole all the way through in one direction and then go back through from the other direction.
Step 4 Violet Square Button
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Emerald Green Round Button
Make a ball out of the Emerald colored clay and then flatten it into a large circle.
Step 2 Emerald Green Round Button
Poke four large holes in the button with the clay tool. Poke each hole all the way through in one direction and then go back through from the other direction.
Step 3 Emerald Green Round Button
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Hot Pink Round Button
Make a ball out of the Hot Pink and then flatten it into a large circle. Using a circle cutter smaller than circle press firmly, making an indent, but not cutting completely through the clay.
Step 2 Hot Pink Round Button
Poke two large holes in the button with the clay tool. Poke each hole all the way through in one direction and then go back through from the other direction.
Step 3 Hot Pink Round Button
See the instructions for placing a screw in the back before baking.
Step 1 Inserting Screws
After your pieces are constructed, turn them over. Gently press the head of the screw into the middle of the back of each piece.
Step 2 Inserting Screws
You may even want to reinforce the screw by putting a piece of scrap clay all the way around it. It doesn't matter what color you use, this part will not be seen. When the screws are inserted and secure, bake the entire piece. You may bake the pieces up side down with the screws pointing up. You'll want to line your baking sheet with a piece of white paper just to make sure nothing gets picked up from the pan onto the front of your decorations. Bake at 275 °F for 15 minutes.
