Sculpey III Snail
Britta Lautenschlager

This little critter is easy and fun to make!

Getting Started

Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces.  Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly.  Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4 in (6 mm) thickness.  For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.  Baking should be completed by an adult.

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Step 1

Using Just Orange make a 4” long club shape for body.  Bend the thick part of the club up slightly to form the head.  Make two short logs (approx. 7/8” L) and 2 small balls (approx. 1/4" dia.) for the eye sockets.  Using the modeling tool, press holes into the eye sockets to fit the eye balls.  Attach the balls onto the logs to make eye stalks.

Using Violet, make a 5” long club shape for the shell.  Curl the club into a coil.

Using Lime, make one small oval for the nose (approx. 1/8” L).  Also make 21 tiny balls for the spots (approx. 1/16” dia.).

Using the White, make two small balls for the eye balls (approx. 1/8” dia.).

Using the Black clay, make two tiny balls for the eye centers (approx. 1/16” dia.).

Step 2

To assemble the snail – Using the purple modeling tool, press a mouth into the face and attach the nose. Press the eye balls into the eye sockets and then press firmly to top of the head. Press the shell to the top of the body and press spots onto it.

Step 3

Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275° (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) of thickness. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT exceed the above temperatures or recommended baking time. Baking should be completed by an adult.

Tip

Always press pieces together firmly before baking!
