These little guys are too cute to ruin a picnic!
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4” (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Using Red Hot Red clay, make 2 ovals and flatten for feet. Also make 2 little balls and push these into place on one end of the feet for ankles. Cut a piece of wire at least 2" long and push into the ankles.
Using Red Hot Red clay, make the following pieces for the hands: 2 teardrop shapes, 2 little comma shapes for thumbs, and 2 little ovals for the wrists. Assemble the pieces as shown to make a "mitten". Cut a piece of wire at least 1.5" long and insert into the wrist.
Bake the hands and feet at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes.
Using Red Hot Red clay, make the following pieces for the body: large ball (approx. 3/4") a medium ball (approx. 11/16”), a smaller ball (approx 1/2"), a cylinder (approx. 7/16” H) for the neck, and a fat teardrop (approx. 1” H)for the head.
Using White clay, make two ovals for the eyes. Also make 2 small white balls for the highlights of the eyes. Using black clay, make the center of the eyes.
Stack the red body parts up like a snowman. Starting from the bottom the pieces should be:
- - Large ball, medium ball, small ball, cylinder and tear drop
Add the eyes/center of the eyes and white highlights as shown. Using Red Hot Red clay, make 2 little comma shapes for eyelids.
Push 1.5" wires into the head for antennas. Push the wire ends of the hands and feet into place.
Using the plastic craft knife from the Clay Tool Starter Set, add a mouth in the face and some little nostrils.
Bake at 275° (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) of thickness. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT exceed the above temperatures or recommended baking time. Baking should be completed by an adult
After clay has cooled completely, bend the arms and legs and antennas with pliers or your fingertips.
Always press pieces together firmly before baking!
