Time to Complete: More than an Hour
(Time estimate to create two boxes.)
Step 1
Preheat oven to 275° F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay.
Step 2
With lids on, measure lower portion of each box from lid edge to base. Cut paper strips of appropriate size to wrap around lower part of each box, cutting multiple strips if necessary. If desired, trace box bottoms and cut out paper just inside traced lines.
Step 3
Paint boxes and lids white; let dry. Glue paper strips around boxes, piecing together as needed. Glue paper inside box bottoms.
Step 4
Prepare clay, conditioning one color at a time. Note: You will need enough Whipped Cream clay to cover top of both box lids; very large boxes may require additional packages of clay. Using Acrylic Roller, roll each color into ⁄"-thick sheet.
Step 5
Using fingers or water mister, very lightly moisten Whipped Cream clay. Place mini grid Texture Maker on clay and apply pressure using heel of hand or Acrylic Roller; peel plate away. For clay pieces larger than Texture Maker, simply line up pattern with edge of previously textured area and apply pressure; apply most pressure in center of Texture Maker, avoiding distinct line at pattern edges. Gently blot excess water with paper towel.
Step 6
Lightly press each box lid onto Whipped Cream clay to create outline. Use Clay Knife to cut just inside line; leave clay cut-outs on work surface.
Step 7
Texture remaining clay colors using Texture Wheel and interchangeable heads. In the event clay sticks to wheel, gently press down on edge of clay sheet with free hand to hold it in place while texturing. To create ribbons, cut clay into long strips using wave and rick-rack Super Slicer blades.
Step 8
Using photo as guide, determine ribbon placement on box lid. Apply Bake & Bond to back of each clay ribbon and press to textured Whipped Cream lid, aligning ribbons with grid pattern; trim ends. For curved lids, bend flexible Super Slicer blade to match curve of lid and then trim ends.
Step 9
Use rick-rack Super Slicer blade to cut very thin strips from non-textured clay to ll in gaps in design, especially near top and bottom. Adhere strips to clay lid and trim ends.
Step 10
Using Lift ‘n Scrape tool, carefully lift clay lids from work surface. Apply Bake & Bond to back of clay and press pieces to box lids. Place lids on baking sheet and bake at 275° F for 30 minutes; let cool completely.
Step 11
Antique clay, applying Antiquing Medium to ribbons using scruy brush. Immediately wipe away excess with paper towels; let dry. Apply one coat of Satin Glaze to clay; let dry.
