Premo Clay Dry Erase Tile Board

Cheryl Adams

Make this decorative dry erase board for use in your home or at work.

Getting Started

Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Step 1

Wipe tile to remove any dust from surface. Set aside.

Step 2

Condition one half of 2 oz block of Premo! Clay (amount used will vary depending on design, layering and tile size used)

Step 3

Once softened, form oblong ball and roughly flatten with fingers, then roll with brayer to a 1/8” thickness. Hint: The plastic side of a sheet of freezer paper works well and it is easy to clean up when you’re done.

Step 4

Lay clay lightly onto tile to determine a desired pattern, leaving space open on tile for “dry erase messages”.

Step 5

Once you have determined area to be covered and direction you want stamped pattern to be, remove clay and stamp. (You may stamp clay once it is already on tile, or before placing clay on tile, depending on design and image.)

Step 6

Applying a thin layer of Translucent Liquid Sculpey -spread thinly with finger over tile, where clay will be placed, and on edges- will provide the needed adhesive once baked.

Step 7

Edges need to be pressed firmly so you may need to re-stamp). If using light colored clay you may wish to use a colored ink to outline image detail.

Step 8

Lay stamped clay onto tile and adhere edges of clay to sides of tile by pressing firmly and removing excess clay as you fold it over from front.

Step 9

If adding a layered look with another piece of clay, stamped design must be stamped on that clay before placing on tile over 1st layer (use a small amount of Translucent Liquid Sculpey where layers of clay overlap).

Step 10

Be creative and roll a piece of foil around barrel of dry erase marker, remove from marker and use to form clay where you want marker to be stored on tile. (Foil will hold the clay form while baking.)

Step 11

Finish any uncovered edges of tile by firmly pressing and overlapping small amounts of clay with fingers – roll lightly with brayer to smooth and stamp if desired.

Step 12

Apply Pearl-Ex powders with brush.

Step 13

Bake according to directions. Always use an oven thermometer to test the accuracy of whatever oven you are using be it a household oven or a toaster oven. Remove and cool.

Step 14

Cut coordinating color of cardstock to tile size and apply to back of finished tile with epoxy. After this is dry, glue (4) – ¾” button magnets on each corner. Allow glue to set thoroughly. Can be used on refrigerator, locker, file cabinet, etc…… Hint: If using larger tile you can use wire display stand or hang with proper hardware to wall.

Step 15

Optional: Apply Studio by Sculpey Glaze over baked clay and allow to dry.
