Kids will have fun making these cool bugs and decorating a box to keep their bug collection in.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Box Step 1
Paint box bottom yellow and top green. Allow to dry. Cut out paper to fit top. Glue paper to top with double-sided tape. Set aside.
Box Step 2
Letters – Take some Blue clay and make thin clay snakes, about 1/8” thick. Cut sections with knife tool to shape letters that will spell out “My Bugs”. Smooth seams together. Set to the side.
Box Step 3
Flowers – Roll thin sheets of Red, Orange, and Purple. Use the flower shaped cutter to cut out a few flowers of each color. Roll some small Yellow balls. Press a Yellow ball into the middle of each cut flower. Set to the side.
Box Step 4
Caterpillar – Take some Aqua clay and roll 6 balls that are about ¼” each. Press the balls together in a row. Roll two tiny Black balls and press onto the head for the eyes. Roll one small Red ball and put it on the head for the nose. Use the knife tool to draw a mouth. Set to the side.
Box Step 5
Butterfly - Make a ½” Brown oval log for body. Make four Red teardrops for wings. Make four smaller Purple teardrops and press on top of the Red wings. Press wings to sides of body. Set to the side.
Purple and Green Bug Step 1
Make a 1-½” Purple oval for body, a 5/8” Lime Green ball for head, 2 Red snakes for antennas, tiny Red ball for tongue, 2 tiny Black balls for eyes, Orange ball for nose, 6 Green balls for feet, 6 Lime Green balls for spots, and 2 Green teardrops for wings.
Purple and Green Bug Step 2
Press spots on wings. Press wings on body. Press feet on lower body. Carve mouth on head with knife tool. Press head on body. Press on tongue, nose, eyes, and antennas. Set to the side.
Spider Step 1
Make a 1-½” Green oval for body, a 5/8” Green ball for head, 8 Lime Green snakes for legs, 5 flat Red ovals for spots, a tiny Red ball for nose, a tiny Red oval for the tongue, and 2 tiny Black balls for eyes.
Spider Step 2
Carve mouth on head with knife tool. Press red ovals on body. Press legs and head on body. Press on tongue, nose and eyes. Set to the side.
Dragonfly Step 1
Make 2 large, about 1-¼”, White teardrops and 2 smaller teardrops for wings. Make 6 Blue balls for head and body, starting with a ½” diameter head and getting smaller toward tail. Make 2 Orange snakes for antennas, a Yellow ball for nose, Red ball for tongue, 2 tiny Black balls for eyes, and 3 long Black snakes for legs.
Dragonfly Step 2
Press Blue balls together for body. Carve lines in wings with knife tool. Press wings on body. Carve mouth on head with knife tool. Press antennas, eyes, nose and tongue on head. Make legs into upside-down U shape with flat bottom. Do not attach legs before baking. Set to the side.
Bee Step 1
Make 2 White 1 ½” teardrops for wings, 2 Yellow ½” balls, 3 Black ½” balls for body, ½” Black ball for head, 2 Yellow snakes for antennas, a flat Yellow heart for face, Orange ball for nose, tiny Red ball for tongue, 2 Black balls for body, 2 tiny Black balls for eyes and 4 Black clubs for legs.
Bee Step 2
Press together Yellow and Black balls for body and shape into oval. Carve mouth on head with knife tool. Press head on body. Press on tongue, nose and eyes. Attach legs to both sides of body. Carve lines on wings with knife tool. Press on wings. Set to the side.
Butterfly Step 1
Make 4 Blue 1 ¼” teardrops for wings, 2 Purple and 2 Orange flat teardrops for wing tops, a Green ball for nose, 2 Lime Green snakes for antennas, a 2” Red club for body, 2 tiny Black balls for eyes and 3 long Black logs for legs.
Butterfly Step 2
Press Purple and Orange wing tops on wings and press them on body. Carve mouth on head with tool. Press head on body. Press on eyes, nose and antennas. Make legs into upside-down U shape with flat bottom. Do not attach legs before baking. Set to the side.
Caterpillar Step 1
Make 4 Lime Green and 3 Green balls for body. Balls get smaller from head to tail - ball for head is ¾” and last ball of snake is ½”. Make 2 Green snakes for antennas, 12 Red balls and 12 Yellow balls for body dots, a small Red ball for tongue, a small Blue ball for nose and 2 tiny Black balls for eyes.
Caterpillar Step 2
Press Red and Yellow body dots on body balls. Press body balls together. Carve mouth into head with knife tool. Press head on body. Press on tongue, nose, eyes and antennas. Set to the side.
Red Bug Step 1
Make a 1-¼” Red oval for body, a ½” Green ball for head, 6 Green clubs for legs, 6 small Pink balls for spots, 2 small Lime Green snakes for antennas, a small Lime Green ball for nose, small Red ball for tongue, and two tiny Black balls for eyes.
Red Bug Step 2
Press spots on body. Press legs on body. Carve mouth on head and line up back with knife tool. Press head on body. Press on tongue, nose, eyes and antennas. Set to the side.
Ant Step 1
Make the following out of Brown Clay; a ¾”oval for the head, a ball and an oval for the body, 6 club shapes for the legs, and 2 small snakes for antennas. Make two tiny Black balls for eyes.
Ant Step 2
Press body parts together. Press legs on body. Carve mouth on head with tool. Press head on body. Press on eyes and antennas. Set to the side.
Finishing Step 1
Bake all pieces according to instructions above. Allow to cool.
Finishing Step 2
Attach letters, flowers, worm and butterfly to box lid with glue. Attach legs to butterfly and dragonfly with glue.
