Now you don’t have to mix all the shades of metal in the metallic palette—just go straight to making and having fun! By twisting the filling on this carved and back filled brooch, the two-tone capability of the metallic clay adds pattern.
Step 1
Roll ¼ package of 18k Gold into a sheet on the thickest setting of the pasta machine, or approximately 1/8” thick. Cut desired shape and press it lightly to the glass or wooden form. Bake according to the manufacturer’s instructions on the clay package.
Step 2
Sand the surface lightly with 400 then 600 grit wet sandpaper. Carve a pattern of lines into the surface at least 1 mm deep.
Step 3
Roll small bits of the additional colors into sheets about 1/16” thick. Cut a strip as long as the line to be filled. Twist the strip evenly down its length. Firmly press the twisted strip into the carved groove. Lay the blade nearly parallel to the surface of the brooch and trim away the clay that is above the surface. Continue with all the various colors until all the carving has been filled.
Step 4
Re-bake the brooch. Sand to remove any extra color on the surface.
Step 5
Apply a pin finding on the back with a drop of superglue. Cover the glued pin with a small square of the base color clay. Adhere this patch with a dab of Liquid Sculpey. Bake again.
Step 6
Polish the front of the bead against a muslin buffing wheel or apply Sculpey gloss if desired.
