This striking pendant is created with custom colors mixed by the designer. The mokume gane technique highlights the colors making this pendant one you’ll enjoy wearing or giving.
Getting Started
Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Creating Custom Colors
Mix the ½ block of Turquoise with a small pinch of Burnt Umber to create the Blue color. Mix the ½ block of green with 1/8 block of Cadmium, 1/8 block of Gold and a small pinch of Black to create the Green color. Using colors straight from the package or custom mixing your own colors is also an option.
Step 1
Create a skinner blend from the two desired colors. Roll the blend to a medium thickness (1 mm) and 2 to 3 inches wide by 8 inches long.
Step 2
Cut a strip from the blend about 1 ½” wide and set aside.
Step 3
Roll a sheet of Black clay as thin as possible and the same size as the larger portion of the colored blend. Layer the Black on the colored blend and roll smooth.
Step 4
Cut the sheet into about 4 equal pieces and stack them, rotating each piece so that the colors alternate. Cut this stack into quarters and stack them as well.
Step 5
Compress the stack, if necessary, to thin the layers and make the loaf about 1” tall.
Step 6
Stab various tools into the top of the loaf to distort and alter the surface. Compress the sides to close up the stabbed spaces.
Step 7
With the rigid bald of the Super slicer, slice thin pieces from the loaf at an angle nearly parallel to the top of the loaf.
Step 8
Roll additional clay into a sheet and apply the slices to cover an area about 2” x 2”
Step 9
Using scrap or additional clay, shape a slightly domed base for the pendant. Apply the patterned sheet to one side of the shape. Cut the reserved blend sheet from Step 2 to the opposite curve of the patterned sheet. Apply it to the base form. Add tiny bits of Black clay to the surface and blend them in.
Step 10
Place the entire assembly on a sheet of Black clay and trim all edges clean, but leaving a slight tab at the top.
Step 11
Apply a thin sheet of Black clay over the seam, extending to the top. Texture this area with the 2 mm Style & Detail tool. Pierce through the extended tab for the cord.
Step 12
Bake at 275 °F for 30 minutes. Sand the smooth sides, if desired. Thread the cord through the hole and tie, leaving at least 24 in. length.
Wet Dry Sandpaper 800 grit – if desired
Various poking tools – pens, pencils, keys, polymer clay tools such as needle tool
